Centered Riding®

Centered Riding Inc is an American not-for-profit organization founded by Sally Swift. It is a teaching organization with world-wide membership and certified instructors on five continents.

Centered Riding's Four Basics


Soft Eyes: seeing and being aware of everything around you (peripheral vision)


Breathing: using diaphram and ribcage muscles


Building Blocks or Balance: front-to-back, side-to side and in all directions, ability to continuously rebalance


Centering: comes from the martial arts and allows us to use our bodies more efficiently


Later Sally added "Grounding" and "Clear Intent"


Clinic Types


Open Clinics: open to riders of all disciplines and levels (organizer may opt to have them discipline oriented) 

  • Taught exclusively by CR Level III, CR Level IV Apprentices and CR Level IV Clinicians


Advanced Open Clinics: open to riders of all levels and disciplines who have a strong background in CR and want a more indepth CR experience

  • CR Level IV Clinicians are the only ones authorized to teach these clinics


Instructor Courses: taught in two parts with Part 1 being 3-days and Part 2 4-8 weeks later and is 4-days

  • CR Level IV Clinicians are the only ones authorized to teach these courses


Instructor and All-Level Update Clinics: for recertification of CR Instructors and is 4-days in length

  • CR Level IV Clinicians are the only ones authorized to teach these clinics
